An option to try a new snowshoe route down to hwy 550 via John montles summer route. 9am at ACP. Check with John ( john at martintelephone.com or 247-2581 ) for other pickup locations. And remember not to use "reply" to try to reach John - he'll never see it because it goes to the e-mail coordinator instead - and he is off at Aspen From seniorsoutdoors at brainstorminternet.net Sun Feb 5 17:11:09 2012 From: seniorsoutdoors at brainstorminternet.net (Seniors Outdoors!) Picnic Tuesday, June 12th 1 or 2 organized club member(s) to lead or co-lead the planning team 6 - 8 members to be part of the planning and execution team (Grill team volunteers will be recruited later, in the spring.) Before you say "no" to a lead position, please consider this... Several key volunteer members from prior years are signed on, have wonderful experience, and are willing to help the new leader(s.) Among them, Burt Coleman, Helge Atwood, and Bob Powell will provide assistance with food purchases, clean-up, and other planning tasks. Jack Tischhauser who led this event since its inception has left the club with excellent notes and planning documents. Planning for this event has historically begun in early-April with a kick off meeting to plan and assign responsibilities. The leader(s) does not have to recruit volunteers; that is done for you. Nor does the team coordinate the food drive. That is all staffed and organized by other club members. Bottom line, if we don't get a lead(s) we won't have a picnic, one of the club's premier social events! Please, if you have not already volunteered in any other capacity for the club, consider one of these positions! Or, if you are one of those absolutely wonderful club members who consistently go the extra mile volunteering for the benefit of all, I'd love to hear from you. Please do not hit reply in response to this e-mail. Instead, please contact Barb Hancock directly at 970.764.4531 or barbhancock at bresnan.net Thank you! Then go to the power lines down into Lime Creek, across the creek and out Lime creek road to our shuttle car. Rough estimated distance is 5 miles, approx 4-5 hrs, rated hard moderate for distance, nothing too technical, low avalanche danger. Definitely skiable if it isn't too warm this week and gets crusty into Lime Creek. Early turn back OK with a partner and radio. 9am at ACP. They have an approximately 5 mile one way route planned from the Lower Lime Creek Road to the Purgatory Trailhead. The route will start where the Lime Creek Road is plowed to, then go past Purgatory Flats, the confluence of Lime Creek and Cascade Creek, then up the Purgatory Trail to the trailhead where a shuttle car will be planned. The hard part is breaking trail up front but that will make it more moderate for those in the back. RSVP not nessessary but be at ACP at 9AM for carpooling. I recommend snowshoes not skis for this. Total distance may be about 5 miles rated moderately hard for distance (the actual rating for these kinds of trips -according to Will is - Moderate My-Ass!) Note that there will be a fire and skewers if you want to bring brats or hot dogs PLUS a 10"x10" grill basket for other things at lunch time. John will try kabob stuff in the basket ACP at 9AM. Plenty of new snow to do epic slides (our last ones are on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_PH3kVRpRk &feature=related), and plunges back to the cars. At lunch lets share some drinks and snacks, (wine and cheese) to celebrate the snow season. Of course- 9 o'clock at Animas City Park for carpooling. We have some notable converts to snowshoeing - namely Lynn Coburn who may now be warm enough. Also John Bregar who was caught smiling while snowshoeing. And even the diehard skier Travis admitted snowshoeing can be fun. However, after missing much of the season we finally had Bill Cagle back with the comment, "Is this all I have been missing?" The following Saturday Kate and I will be in Utah on Bill's trip (Is this all we've been missing?) but there may be a snowshoe while we're away if someone has an idea. After that there may be some more snow outings but on an ad hoc basis. Did I mention it's been my pleasure to be out every Saturday with you guys? Guess I forgot (How many do we have today? 16? 18? 17? - OK we'll go with 17) Post-Trip Correction to Sat Feb 25 snowshoe description. Instead of Moderate-my-ass let's just call it for what it was- Hard. Also I forgot to mention Plunging! And I wouldn't recommend carrying 45 pounds for the fun of it. We have a new record this year: How many times we needed to dig someone out with a shovel after getting their snowshoe stuck under a rock, log, or tree well. My unofficial guess is at least 20 times!
